I have sewn my first knit shirt.
I have been putting off stretch knit sewing for a while now (except over locking the edges of a baby wrap but that does not count). I have had the fabric, patterns and needles but not the guts to give it a go. That is until Celebrate the Boy Month started over at Made by Rae and Made. When Dana posted her 90 minute shirt tutorial and talked about how easy it was I was given the last little push that I needed to brave my fears.
I ended up using a pattern from Ottobre 1/09 and a thrifted men's shirt. I added a reverse applique star in the middle. I used a twin needle to top stitch the neck binding and cuffs and used the my machine for the whole thing. Next time (and there will be next times) I sew a knit shirt I will use the over locker and sew more slowly and carefully when I am topstitching in a contrasting colour. Even though it is not perfect I am very happy with my first attempt at making a stretch knit shirt. You know what they say, practice makes perfect.
